Randy: What I’ve learned since getting diagnosed with prostate cancer - KARE11.com

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — “We're ready to go," says the radiation tech. Radiation treatment number 18 for me at Minnesota Oncology in Maplewood. After much thought, I chose this option, radiation combined with the drug, Lupron, over robotic surgery and other treatments for prostate cancer.  Lupron turns off testosterone in men, which basically kills the cancer. But radiation is used to make sure it's gone both inside and outside the prostate. For me, 26 radiation treatments in all.  Having been through cancer before, radiation is a relative breeze compared to chemo - but all treatments have side effects and prostate cancer treatment has its fair share. And most men actually choose treatment based on the side effects they can live with. “When you're talking about incontinence and erectile dysfunction, which are the two big ones that men come in for, that's absolutely in the calculus," says Chris Knoedler. Meet my docs, urologist and surgeon Chris Knoedler ou...

New study results with AroCell TK 210 ELISA in prostate cancer has been accepted for publication - GlobeNewswire

Image
The study with the title “The combination of AroCell TK 210 ELISA with Prostate Health Index (PHI) or PSA density can improve the ability to differentiate prostate cancer from non-cancerous conditions” will be published in the peer-reviewed journal “The Prostate”. The link to the article will be made available during March when the article has been published. The aim of the study was to investigate the diagnostic value of the AroCell TK 210 ELISA together with free PSA, pro PSA and PHI in differentiating prostate cancer from benign urological conditions. This study was performed in collaboration with Ljubljana University Medical Centre and the Maribor University Medical Centre, Ljubljana. “We are delighted with the promising results in this scientific study, which supports that the AroCell TK 210 ELISA can be a valuable tool in prostate cancer management”, says Michael Brobjer, AroCell CEO. Local Organizations Team Up, Take Zero Prostate Cancer Challenge - CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) —  In 2019, over 164,000 men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, and over 29,000 will die from the disease. 100 Black Men of Maryland and Huber Memorial Church are taking on a new challenge, the Zero Prostate Cancer Challenge. “We initially started with just the Prostate Cancer screening, but wanted to expand that to various other aspects of the overall health of our community,” Kenneth Heyward, of 100 Black Men of Maryland, said. 100 Black Men of Maryland and Huber Memorial Church have teamed up with Chesapeake Urology to take action in fighting this disease. Doctors said that early screening is key. “You can have all the insurance in the world, however, you can still be sick,” Dr. Gregory Branch said. “It’s important, if you don’t know what you have to do to prevent a lot of diseases, you won’t know. Having health care and going to your doctor is a great thing, but if I can prevent that disease, wouldn’t it be better?” Doctors also said that African-Ame...

Immunotherapy Combo Active in Metastatic Prostate Cancer - Medscape

Image
SAN FRANCISCO — Immune checkpoint inhibitor monotherapy has so far had little success in the treatment of prostate cancer , in contrast to the clinical benefit seen in many other cancer types, including melanoma , as well as lung and kidney cancer combination therapy, which has now shown activity in advanced disease. And so there is interest in the activity seen in advanced metastatic prostate cancer with the combination of ipilimumab ( Yervoy, Bristol-Myers Squibb) and nivolumab ( Opdivo, Bristol-Myers Squibb). The data come from a phase 2 trial that were discussed here at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium (GUCS) 2019. "In a malignancy where immune checkpoint monotherapy has shown limited activity, nivolumab plus ipilimumab demonstrated antitumor activity in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC)," said study author Padmanee Sharma, MD, PhD, professor of Genitourinary Medical Oncology and Immunology at the University of Texas MD Ande...

Performance of Multiparametric MRI Appears Better when Measured in Patients who Undergo Radical Prostatectomy - Beyond the Abstract - UroToday

Image
The utility of mpMRI for prostate cancer diagnosis has been widely demonstrated. Still, considerable variation in accuracy has been reported in the literature. Such variation complicates patient counseling and clinical decision making about biopsy. Scoring systems such as PIRADS have been created to improve accuracy and reduce variability by standardizing mpMRI interpretation. However, prostate cancer detection rates can still vary widely even when stratified by suspicion score. For example, detection of clinically significant prostate cancer has been reported in between 21% to 98% for PIRADS 4 lesions. 1-3 To optimize the usefulness of mpMRI, physicians should accurately quote patients a numerical risk of cancer based on their MRI. This requires physicians to recognize the factors beyond PIRADS score that can affect mpMRI accuracy. For example, several variables that affect MRI accuracy include variation in radiology interpretation, 4 mpMRI protocols, 5 PSA density, 6 and even pat...
