Biomarkers may predict response to immunotherapy in prostate cancer - Healio

Sumit K. Subudhi Despite the success of immunotherapy in the treatment of patients with advanced malignancies, responses in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer have been limited. Cancers such as melanoma and lung cancer that respond well to immune checkpoint inhibitors have high levels of underlying genetic mutations. Neoantigens produced as a result of these mutations may lead to an immune response. Prostate cancer has relatively few underlying mutations and produces fewer neoantigens. May 12, 2020 — The novel radiopharmaceutical 18F-PSMA-1007 is both effective and readily available for detecting malignant prostate cancer lesions, according to research published in the April issue of  The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.  With this new option and 68Ga-PSMA-11, which is already widely used, nuclear medicine departments will have two effective options for staging of prostate cancer, potentially increasing availability for patients worldwide. 68Ga-PSMA is the most commonly used PSMA-labeled tracer in clinical practice for evaluating extent of disease in prostate cancer patients. However, it is produced by a specific generator and has a short half-life of 68 minutes. The authors of the study, published in the leading cancer journal Annals of Oncology today, say their findings suggest ADT appears to protect men from COVID-19 infection.
