Steve Ranson LVN Radiation oncologist Dr. Gary Campbell develops a plan for every patient to treat prostate cancer. Steve Ranson / LVN Radiology technician Sarah Pimentel brings up my treatment plan. Steve Ranson / LVN Show CaptionsHide Captions An elevated PSA (prostate-specific antigen) score and biopsy all pointed toward cancer. Dr. Brian Montgomery, an urologist with Carson Urology, ordered a bone scan to ensure the cancer hadn’t metastasized. On bone scans, Montgomery said he uses criteria based on National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate to another organ or the bones. “The higher the PSA, the more likely prostate cancer is present,” he said. In two years my PSA scored quadrupled to almost 17. Normal is less than four. I had to wait two more weeks to learn of the results. If the cancer spread, I may be looking at a radical prostatectomy and some type of treatment like chemot...

Trial Finds Breast Cancer Drug Set to Transform Prostate Cancer Treatment - Pharmacy Times

Image
The conclusion of a major trial has found that a drug used to treat breast and ovarian cancers can extend the lives of some men with prostate cancer and should become a new standard treatment for the disease, according to research presented at the 2020 European Society for Medical Oncology Meeting. The final results from the trial showed that olaparib, a poly ADP ribose polymerase inhibitor that is the first cancer drug to target an inherited genetic fault, can be used successfully to treat prostate cancers with a weakness in the ability to repair damaged DNA. According to the research, the innovative drug was more effective than the modern hormone treatments abiraterone and enzalutamide at slowing down the growth and spread of prostate cancer in patients with advanced disease. Although the trial had already reported an improvement in disease development and outcome for this group of men with DNA repair faults in their tumors, the final results published at this stage offer a longer ...

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to American Cancer Society, one out of nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Ted was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 71. “The percentage of men my age that do come down with it is quite high, so I was startled – obviously nobody wants to find out they have cancer – but I wasn’t shocked,” prostate cancer patient Ted said. However, Ted found out he was a prime candidate for a type of treatment called HIFU, which stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The procedure has been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t approved for use on prostate cancer in the U.S. until 2015. “The HIFU procedure is basically a high-intensity focused ultrasound beam that oblates the cancer cells – basically blasts the cells away,” Ted said. Urologic surgeon Dr. Andre Abreu with Keck Medicine of USC says there’s a spectrum of patients who develop prostate cancer. Some are very low-risk, meaning they have...

With the exception of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common affecting men. Most cases are diagnosed in men over 65 and it rarely occurs in men under 40. According to the American Cancer Society, about 174,650 prostate cancer cases are diagnosed each year. As the month of September brings prostate cancer into focus, it’s time to increase public understanding of the disease.   September was first designated National Prostate Health Month by the American Foundation for Urological Disease (AFUD) in 1999. AFUD is now known as the Urology Care Foundation. Originally the aims of observing NPHM were more proscribed, concentrating on making the public better informed about prostate health issues.   Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and is a leading cause of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer.   Staying informed with the latest news on prevention and screening is an important step in reducing your risk of developing prostate ...

Reduce The Number Of Men With Delayed Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Due To COVID - PRNewswire

Image
DENVER , Sept. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, but it is easily treated when caught early - the problem is that too often it is not. Recent studies state that an estimated 23,000 men may experience delayed diagnosis of the disease due to fewer doctor visits and reduced testing. That is why the Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC) – a national organization committed to men's health and a leader in prostate cancer screening –  is providing free prostate cancer testing to men across the country.  Committed to encouraging men to take a more proactive role in protecting their health, PCEC has coordinated free screening programs for over 30 years and recommends that men should have a baseline screening at age 40 and then work with their physicians to determine what the appropriate interval is for repeat testing.  Additionally, PCEC has aligned with at-home digital screening provider imaware ™  to p...
