"Cancer cells are very smart," said the lecturer of biology at the University of North Georgia (UNG). "You can target one pathway to kill them, and they activate another pathway." Rutgers researchers have discovered human gene markers that work together to cause metastatic prostate cancer – cancer that spreads beyond the prostate. The study, published in the journal  Nature Cancer , explored prostate cancer cells from people and mice and found a wide collaboration among 16 genes that leads to metastasis, which often leads to treatment challenges. The gene markers identified can predict if a prostate cancer patient has a high probability of developing metastasis, including bone. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States with a five-year relative survival rate of near 100 percent when diagnosed early. Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Scientists say they now may be able to identify men with prostate cancer at risk for it to spread, according to an article published Monday by the journal Nature Cancer. In their analysis of prostate cancer cells from people and mice, researchers from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey found that a "collaboration among 16 genes" leads to metastasis, meaning that the cancer has spread to one or more other parts of the body. Last month, the CDC launched a prostate cancer information program with a uniquely digital face: a "virtual human" named Nathan who speaks with men about screening and treatment. "Talk to Someone About Prostate Cancer" takes the form of an in-browser interactive video developed by health simulation company Kognito, where Nathan introduces himself and prompts the viewer by asking how confident they are talking to their provider about prostate cancer screening. A first-of-its-kind study in the UK is aiming to solve the mystery of why black men develop prostate cancer at twice the rate of other men in the UK. The PROFILE study will look at the genes of men of African and Caribbean descent to see if they can learn to predict prostate cancer risk, and find better ways of diagnosing and treating the disease. In the UK, one in four black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, double the one in eight risk faced by all men. This Black History Month, the hope is to raise awareness of this increased risk for black men and encourage men who are eligible to take part in the study, which has resumed after being forced to temporarily halt recruitment due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The study is currently open to men aged 40-69, who are of African or Caribbean descent and haven’t previously had prostate cancer. It will continue to recruit men until 1 June 2021.
